The Nigerian Army Council has approved the promotion of 122 senior officers from the ranks of colonel to brigadier general and brigadier general to major general.
In a statement issued Friday, the spokesman of the army, Brig Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, said the officers comprised 70 colonels and 52 brigadiers general.
Nwachukwu explained that the promotion by the council was in recognition of meritorious service to the nation.
He said they were elevated to the next ranks in a document signed and released by the Military Secretary (Army).

The statement reads in part: “Among those promoted to the rank of majors general are AA Ayanuga, EH Akpan, NM Jega, JO Ugwuoke PAO Okoye, EF Oyinlola, AA Adekeye, AE Edet, AB Mohammed and MT Usman.”
He said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, had congratulated them and charged them to remain focused, selfless and loyal in their service to the nation to justify the confidence and trust reposed in them.
