A statement by the Army spokesman Brigadier General Olajide Laleye said the fresh court martial is in continuation of efforts by the Nigerian Army to promptly dispose of cases pertaining to violation of the Armed Forces Act, disregard to service discipline and other unprofessional conducts.
“Particularly, in the course of on-going military operations in the North East, a General Court Martial to try offenders will be inaugurated,” the statement said.
General Laleye said that the Court Martial will start around 9.30 Thursday (today) morning at the Conference Hall, Army Headquarters Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja.
Although the army spokesman did not give details of the number of soldiers to be court martialled sources within the military told Daily Trust that those to be charged are up to 60 and will face mutiny charges.
A  General Court Martial headed by Brigadier General Chukuemeka Okonkwo on 15th September had sentenced to death 12 out of 18 soldiers on trial for mutiny and other offenses.
The convicted soldiers were charged with mutiny against the former General Officer Commanding the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmed Mohammed.
