Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced that former two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua will serve as the torchbearer for the rescheduled 2025 National Sports Festival.
The Governor made this announcement on Monday while hosting the British-Nigerian boxer at his office in Ogun State.
“I want to openly request that, besides officially confirming you as our sports ambassador today, we would like you to return to light the Gateway Sports Festival torch. You will have the honor of lighting it up,” Abiodun said.
He further revealed plans by the state to honor Joshua with a new indoor boxing facility. “We will construct a brand-new Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring here in Abeokuta. This will not only celebrate your legacy but also encourage you to visit home more frequently.”
Additionally, the Governor announced a special gift for the boxing icon, saying, “We have decided to give you a brand-new house in Sagamu.”
Governor Abiodun also encouraged Joshua to collaborate with the state on sports development initiatives. He urged him to work with the Director-General of the National Sports Commission and the state’s Commissioner for Sports Development to organize a boxing championship in Ogun State.
