Angry residents beat up suspected car snatcher in Ondo

A suspected car snatcher, simply identified as Bashir, was on Monday beaten up by some angry residents in Ondo State.

Bashir’s ordeal started after he attempted to strangulate a woman and snatch her vehicle. 

City & Crime gathered that the incident happened at Quarters Guard junction around the Shagari area of Akure in the state capital.

Several eyewitnesses said the incident occurred when the middle-aged woman, who was taking her son to school, was trying to move to the other side of the road. 

The suspect, who was said to be by the side of the road, suddenly stopped the woman and grabbed the car wheels from her. 

“The woman had to shout for help which attracted those who came to rescue her. If not, she would have died,’’ one of the witnesses said. 

It was learnt that a crowd of residents, who witnessed the incident quickly intervened in rescuing the woman from further attack. 

Bashir was later apprehended as the mob’s fury boiled over, subjecting him to a brutal beating before the arrival of the security agencies. 

The suspect was,  whisked away with some incriminating items that were found with him. 

The woman expressed shock at the attack, saying she never believed she could survive the incident. 

“I was so shocked with what I experienced while taking my boy to school. The suspect was praying by the roadside when I wanted to cross the highway to buy fuel.

“Suddenly, he flung open the door and pressed my throat. He started dragging the steering wheel with me,” she said. 

Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was arrested and would be investigated.
