Angry mob set mad woman ablaze in Lagos

An angry mob on Tuesday set ablaze a mentally challenged woman for allegedly being in possession of a stolen baby and three AK 47 rifles at Abule Ado, in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Rumour of a suspected mad woman who was allegedly caught with three AK 47 rifles kept in a polythene sack around the Trade Fair area had gone viral on social media around 2.30 pm.

It was learnt that the mob had alleged that the deceased kept the rifles for robbery gangs operating along the Mile 2-Badagry expressway.

Witnesses said some youths in the area went wild when the news of the discovery filtered into their ears.

“The woman was given the beaten of her life before the mob set her on fire,” Emeka Okereke, a trader at the Trade Fair market alleged.

The video of the mad woman clinching onto a rifle had gone viral on social media, prompting the State Police Command to move in swiftly.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who spoke on the issue, said the State Police Command has commenced investigation into the killing and setting ablaze of a suspected mentally challenged woman.

He said the deceased was alleged to have been in possession of a stolen baby and three AK 47 rifles at Abule Ado, under the bridge, Festac Area of Lagos State on Monday, May 24, 2021.

Adejobi said based on preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the mentally challenged woman had been living in the area for several years before she was lynched and set ablaze by some hoodlums in the area on the allegation of being in possession of a baby and three AK 47 rifles.

“The Command wishes to state categorically that the woman was just murdered for reasons best known to the perpetrators of the heinous crime as investigation revealed that no baby and AK 47 rifles were found in her possession neither were they recovered by the perpetrators or the police. It’s just a clear case of murder.”
