A 30-year-old teacher has been arrested for allegedly flogging an 8-year-old pupil into a coma at Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, disclosed this to reporters in her office on Monday and announced the permanent closure of the school.
The commissioner had summoned the school’s proprietor and the teacher, Faith Nwonye, to explain the circumstances leading to the brutalisation of the primary II pupil.
Speaking after the meeting, Chuma-Udeh explained that the school’s closure was not only due to the incident but also because the school was operating illegally.

Expressing sadness over the incident, she lamented that the chances of the victim’s survival, who is currently hospitalised, are only 20%, according to the medical doctor.
Describing the operation of illegal schools in the state and the beating of a child as criminal, the commissioner warned that those engaging in such activities do so at their own risk.
