Anambra state Police Command on Tuesday disclosed that it has arrested 151 suspected cultists across the state in 15 days.
A statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Haruna Muhammed, in Awka, said the command in a raid by the combined team of Special Anti-Cultism unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Divisional Police headquarters carried out raids on suspected criminal hideouts and black spots in the state between April 1 and 16.
“Between 01/04/2019 to date, the State Command have arrested a total number of One hundred and fifty one (151) suspected cultists from various parts of the state.
“At Okija, 16 suspected cultists were arrested; at Nanka, 12 suspects arrested; at Nkwelle, 11 suspects arrested; at Ogidi, 9 suspects arrested; at Awka, 8 suspects arrested; at Ajali/Oko, 14 suspects arrested; at Enugwu Uku/Nimo/Nise, 18 suspects arrested; at Fegge/Awada, 12 suspects arrested; at Inland town Onitsha, 13 suspects arrested; at Achalla, 7 suspects arrested; at Urum, 4 suspects arrested; at Ogbunike, 03 arrested; at Amawbia, 15 suspects and at Ukwulu/Ukpo, 9 suspects were arrested respectively,” he said.
According to the PPRO, the Command equally recovered three machetes, four axes, two berets and some quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemps.
Mohammad said out of the 151suspects arrested, 40 have confessed and they been charged to court.
He said that out of the arrest, 62 were screened and released, 20 are under age and placed under supervision while 29 others are undergoing investigation.
