Anambra community expresses worry over sale of lands

Members of Isuaniocha community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have expressed worry over the sale of communal lands by some unscrupulous elements in the community.

They warned prospective buyers to be weary of buying lands from the community as any communal land acquired illegally will be forfeited.

The former president-general of the community, Chief Anthony Onyeagolu,  said the sale of communal lands had become worrisome despite the crisis in the community, occasioned by land tussle.

He noted that  some members of the community had constituted themselves into a group, terrorising the people and selling their lands.

According to Onyeagolu, those buying landed property   from the cabal in Isuaniocha would lose them once peace returns to the community.

“The situation in our community is very pitiable today. Some people have constituted themselves into tormentors and are selling off community lands, and people are buying and building on them, even as I speak to you now.

“They have chased away many families in the community and are using the opportunity to sell the landed property of all the families that have left the community, using the money to buy cars and marry new wives.

“The few people who resisted the sale of our land were kidnapped and taken into the forest, where they are tied up and beaten until their families paid ransom for their release,” he said.

The spokesperson of the police in Anambra State, Mr Haruna  Mohammed, said the command was  not aware that people in any  community in the state were running away because of threat from land grabbers

“If there is any such issue, they should report to  the police for appropriate action,” he said
