Incarcerated Kaduna journalist regains freedom

A Kaduna-based journalist Luka Binniyat has been released on bail after meeting the conditions set by the court.

Binniyat, a former correspondent of Vanguard Newspapers, spent about 96 days in prison before meeting his bail conditions.

He was charged for breach of public peace and injurious falsehood punishable under section 114 and 393 of the penal code laws of Kaduna state.

Justice Bashir Sukola of the state High Court 10 had on October 9, 2017 relaxed the bail conditions earlier set for Binniyat in the sum of N10million with two sureties in the like sum and a bank bond in same amount, with deposition of the sureties’ international passport. He was however remanded in prison as he could not meet the bail conditions.

A statement by chairman of Kaduna State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Adamu Yusuf, said Binniyat has since reunited with his family.
