Amnesty Int’l football, basketball tourney kicks-off in Abuja

Amnesty International Nigeria three-day football and basketball competition, tagged “WRITE4RIGHTS Sport Tournament” kicked-off yesterday in Abuja.

Six secondary schools in the FCT namely Government secondary school Tudun-Wada, Zone 4 (host), GSS Mabushi, GSS Kubwa, Government Science and Technical College Garki, GSS Wuse Zone 3 and GSS Maitama are taking part in the tournament.

While male students are competing in football, their female counterparts are taking part in basketball.

On the choice of sports to commemorate the International Human Rights Day which comes up on December 10, Country Director, Osai Ojiho, said “ “Human rights is often considered complex, technical and legalistic but with sports you make it more interesting and through entertainment, people can be more open to know what their rights are and how they can respect other people’s rights.

At the end of basketball matches, GSS Tudun-Wada, GSS Maitma, GSS Zone 3 and GSTC Garki qualified for the semi-finals.

In football, GSS Zone 3 defeated GSS Maitama 2-1, GSS Mabushi edged GSS Kubwa 2-1 while the host trounced GSTC Garki 6-0 with Baledoku Isaac hitting a hat-trick.

In a chat with Daily Trust, Captain of Tudun-Wada, Faruq Oyewumi, said “I’m very happy with our performance.

We implemented all that we learnt in training and gave our fellow students a day to forget ‘’.P
