The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) said it has issued 1,697 approvals for residential, commercial, as well as recreational development to prospective developers out of 1,870 applications made between 2017 and 2018.
AMMC said the approvals which were issued through its Department of Development Control represented 90 per cent of the 1,870 submissions, adding that the approvals were estimated to have impacted positively through the creation of 4,060 jobs in the city which cut across all professions in the building industry.
AMMC is the body responsible for control of development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including processing and approving of building plans and control of physical development, as well as design and maintenance of facilities, among other numerous functions.
The council carries out its function through seven departments, particularly the Departments of Development Control, Parks and Recreation and Outdoor Advertisement and Signages.
The Coordinator of AMMC, Umar Shuaibu, who reeled out the figures while giving account of achievements of his administration between 2017 and 2018, said the Department of Development Control in its effort to ensure compliance with the Abuja Master Plan removed a total of 327 illegal developments/shanties in the city within the period under review, adding that the removal served as deterrent to developers who intended to build without approval.
He explained that the council also observed proliferation of night clubs/lounges in residential neighbourhoods which constituted a violation of the land use and master plan of Abuja.
“The council, through its operational departments, has written warning letters and served several contravention notices instructing the operators to vacate such premises and relocate to appropriate uses for their businesses,” he said.
In its effort towards improving the serenity and aesthetic of the city, he said the council, through its Department of Parks and Recreation, embarked on an aggressive planting of flower seedlings throughout the city.
According to him, the council pursued a city beautification programme in which some selected roads and interchanges in the city were beautified. These roads include Bill Clinton Drive, Nnamdi Azikiwe Ring Road and Murtala Mohammed Way.
He said the FCT Fire Service in 2018 received a total of 440 distress calls on fire incidences and was able to rescue property worth over N2.2bn.
