Alleged Fraud: Reinstate Betta Edu If Not Found Guilty, Group Urges Tinubu

The Civil Society Alliance for Transparency and Development (CSATD) has urged President Bola Tinubu to reinstate Betta Edu as Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation if cleared of corruption.

Edu was allegedly involved in N585m scandal, and was consequently suspended by the President.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, Basah Mohammed, National Coordinator of CSATD, cautioned Nigerians to stop media trial of the minister.

The group said: “In reaction to the recent suspension of the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Betta Edu, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over allegations that have dominated the public space in the last couple of days, the Civil Society Alliance for Transparency and Development (CSATD) wish to emphasize the importance of avoiding media trials that can obscure the truth and hinder the public’s understanding of the actual circumstances.

“While commending President Tinubu for taking swift action to suspend the minister, acknowledging the need for an unfettered investigation, we urge caution in the ongoing public discourse.

“President Tinubu’s swift action in suspending Minister Edu reflects a commitment to accountability, and those charged with carrying out his directives on this matter must not at any point drop the ball by going to town with stories, before the conclusion of their investigations.

“We hereby go on record as reminding Nigerians that the suspension of Dr. Edu is neither an indictment nor a conviction, and she remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. It must also be stated that Media trials often muddy the waters, making it challenging to discern the facts and identify the real actors involved because for every public fire there are always private interests stoking it from behind the scenes with a view to profiting from the noise.

“We call on the investigative bodies to conduct a thorough and impartial examination, ensuring that the truth prevails. Simultaneously, we advocate for transparency in the process, as it plays a crucial role in maintaining public trust and confidence. Clearly the other steps taken by the president and the exit of the minister from the public space show that the Renewed Hope agenda is alive and well.

“In the broader context of financial practices within Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in Nigeria, it is essential to acknowledge the pervasive nature of fund transfers to private accounts. Many MDAs engage are in this practice for various reasons, ranging from addressing exigencies to pursuing government objectives, including potentially clandestine activities.

“Furthermore, recognizing the sensitive nature of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the diverse array of Nigerians it serves, we propose that the ministry be granted special status from the overarching financial regulations of the federal government. This special consideration would facilitate the efficient and flexible management of resources in the pursuit of humanitarian objectives.

“In light of these developments, we also urge the Office of the Accountant General and Auditor General to enhance transparency by disseminating clear rules and exemptions related to public finance management. This initiative would guide the media in their reporting, ensuring accuracy and informed public discourse.

“In conclusion, we emphasize the importance of a fair and thorough investigation, free from undue influence, while also calling for measures that promote transparency and responsible reporting in matters of public finance. If it so happens that she is absolved of any willful wrong doing we urge President Tinubu not to hesitate in reinstating the suspended Minister.
