Alia sworn-in as Benue governor, freezes state accounts

The new governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Hycainth Alia, was sworn in into office yesterday amid an unprecedented crowd at the IBB Square in Makurdi.

Alia was administered the oath of office by the chief judge of the state, Justice Morris Ikpambese, alongside his deputy, Sam Ode.

The new governor, in his inaugural speech, promised to better the lives of the people.

He said his administration would work with security agencies in the state and the federal government to curb insecurity while prioritising job creation with emphasis on agriculture to nip unemployment in the bud.

He assured civil servants and pensioners of clearing all unpaid salaries and pension arrears in the shortest time possible, promising henceforth to pay their salaries promptly.

Alia ordered all bank accounts of the state to be frozen until the signatories to the accounts are changed, warning the banks of consequences if they failed to adhere.
