ALGON condemns attacks on Rivers LG secretariats

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has condemned the recent attacks on three local government councils in Rivers State, which followed the just-concluded local government elections.

Daily Trust reports that secretariats in Ikwerre, Eleme, and Umuoha local governments were set ablaze in the aftermath of the October 5 elections, resulting from unrest during the polls.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, ALGON’s newly elected national president, Bello Lawal, denounced the violence and called on security agencies to restore order.

“The recent incidents in Rivers, which led to the burning of local government buildings, are deeply concerning. ALGON condemns such acts in the strongest terms, and we urge security agencies to act swiftly to restore law and order,” Lawal stated.

In response to questions regarding the direct disbursement of funds to local governments from the Federation Account, Lawal noted that following the landmark Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy, steps were taken to implement the ruling.

“Some modalities were established, allowing for a three-month window. This October marks the third month, and we expect local governments to begin receiving allocations directly from the Federation Account as per the Supreme Court ruling,” he said.

Outlining his vision as ALGON president, Lawal emphasised grassroots development as a key priority, aiming to empower local communities through sustainable projects and initiatives. “We will prioritise initiatives that promote economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare at the local level,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of improving basic education and primary healthcare systems. “We are working to enhance access to quality education, improve teacher training, and provide the necessary resources for our children to thrive at the grassroots. Strengthening healthcare systems will be another focus to ensure improved well-being for our communities,” Lawal added.
