Al-Istiqama university holds maiden female lecture series

Female students in Kano have been urged to acquire the models of virtue expected of contemporary Muslim women.

This was the focus of the maiden ‘Mumunaat lecture series hosted by the Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila in Kano, with the topic: “The Sahabiyat: Models of virtue for contemporary Muslim women”.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Salisu Shehu, said it was part of the school’s effort to emulate the injunctions of the Holy Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH) who used to exclusively teach females.

“The important position of women in society compelled us to institute this lecture series. You build the society, you hold the society, you are mothers – the woman is a nation itself.”

The chairperson at the event, who is also the Executive Director and founder, Ilman Nafian Education Development Initiative, Hauwa El-Yakub, reflected on the social issues around the world and lamented how religion and culture were forgotten and things became very difficult for people.

“The virtues we have known are no longer there. Today, women are compelled to take responsibilities not meant for them thereby standing up to reality as a new order of the day,” she said.

The guest speaker, the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Professor Aisha Garba Habib, said the lecture series was organised mainly to discuss issues, share motivational stories and biographies of known female Muslims so that the students would emulate their virtues.
