Players and officials of Akwa United Football Club were involved in a road accident along Ezionye Expressway in Enugu on Friday morning.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club was travelling to Kaduna to honour the Match Day 15 game against Jigawa Stars.

One of the players and two officials were taken to the hospital as an undisclosed number of team members sustained injuries in the accident.

“We have been involved in an accident along Ezionye express road, Enugu on our way to Kaduna for our NPFL matchday 15 game against Jigawa Stars.

“Players and officials have sustained injuries.

“One player and two officials have been taken to the hospital,” Akwa United wrote on their official Twitter handle.

The club’s media officer, Patrick Mfon, told Daily Trust that the players and officials are in stable condition and will be going back to Uyo later today.

“It was a normal road accident. It happened in Enugu along the 9th-mile road.

“We are going back to Uyo. People sustained different degrees of injury and those that are serious were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

“We were planning to get to Abuja this evening and tomorrow get to Kaduna,” he said.

He further stated that the club’s chairman will meet with the League Management Company (LMC) to inform the organisers of their inability to play their game this weekend.

The Promise Keepers are fifth on the NPFL table with 23 points from 14 matches.
