Akwa Ibom govt. to increase corps members allowance

The Akwa Ibom State Government says it’s planning to increase the allowances of corps members serving in the state.

Speaking on Thursday in Uyo during the passing out ceremony of 2019 Batch ‘A’ corps members, governor of the state, Udom Emmanuel, said the increment will improve corps members’ condition and engender higher productivity.

The governor appreciated the Federal Government for enhancing the monthly allowance of corps members in the country, saying corp members have been a critical partner in the development of the state.

Emmanuel, who was represented by Mrs. Mary Bassey, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports, said the contributions of corps members had impacted on all sectors of the economy.

“Your contributions in the implementation of government’s policies and programmes impacted greatly on all sectors, particularly, education, agriculture, infrastructural development and health care service delivery.

“On our part, this government will not relent in paying adequate attention to the welfare and security of corps members.

“I want to use this opportunity to appreciate the Federal government for enhancing the monthly allowance of corps members from N19, 800 to N33,000.00.

“Akwa Ibom state government will also consider an improvement on corps member’s state allowance. This is in a bid to improve corps members’ condition and engender higher productivity.

“The Government and people of Akwa Ibom state cannot compensate you adequately for filling the gap in our educational and socio economic lives,” he stated.

Also speaking, State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Mr. Julius Amusan, congratulated the 2,582 corps members passing out for surmounting the challenges of national service.

He, however, regretted that five of them lost their lives during the service year.

Amusan said that seven corps members who absconded during the period were made to repeat the service year, while 16 others who engaged in misconducts have been made to repeat some months out of the service year.

He said: “I am happy to report that these corps members have conducted themselves as loyal and patriotic Nigerians in accomplishing the four cardinal programmes of the scheme.”
