The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, has said when the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline comes on stream by the fourth quarter this year, Nigeria will have raised its domestic gas pipeline network to 9.1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) from 6.9Bcf.
Kyari who spoke on ‘Effective Gas Resources Utilization’ at the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF) in Abuja on Thursday, said: “Nigeria’s domestic gas infrastructure network has an existing capacity to transport about 6.9BCF of gas to support power generation and gas-based industries.
“We are working assiduously to ensure timely delivery of major domestic gas pipeline infrastructure projects including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline corridor and associated power plants.”
He also stated that there are future expansion plans to cover new markets across the country by 2030 with the pipeline network reaching 16.6Bcf.

According to Kyari, Nigeria’s natural gas reserve rose from 206.53 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF) in 2021 to 209.5TCF last year with prospects for more.
He noted that NNPC is taking advantage of Nigeria’s huge natural gas reserves of over 200TCF with a potential to grow to 600TCF as more investment is expected due to the recent resolution of the Production Sharing Contract disputes with partners.
“This significant reserve will serve as a low-carbon energy alternative that will support growth in the power and industrial sectors, address energy poverty, reduce carbon-footprint and create more employment opportunities,” he added.
Kyari however called for support from private actors to realise the federal government’s National Gas Expansion Programme, which seeks to deepen natural gas utilization as an alternative transportation fuel and for gas-based industries.
