The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari has advocated that financial institutions should give corps members access to credit facilities as well as loans to enable them create jobs and contribute to the growth of the nation’s economy through their entrepreneurial skills.

Speaking in Abuja over the weekend during the closing ceremony of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development (SAED) festival, she said it was obvious that with the right motivation and access to funds, corps members would be able to convert the skills they have learnt during their SAED programme to wealth and jobs.

Speaking through the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osibanjo, she said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has played a significant role in boosting the growth of the nation’s economy as well as uniting the nation.

According to Mrs Buhari, the hardwork exhibited by the corps members during the festival shows that they would not depend on white-collar jobs after their service year, noting that they have taken the scheme’s relevance to a higher level.

On his part, Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim said since the institutionalisation of the SAED programme, about 1.409m corps members have been sensitized on the need for self-empowerment.

He added that 764,677 have so far completed the full skill and entrepreneurship training while up to eighteen thousand six hundred and eighty-two (18,682) have set up businesses through self-help, Bank loans and grants from donors.

In his address, Director, SAED, Mr Hilary Nasamu said competitions were organised at professional skill centres within and around Abuja metropolis under the watchful eyes of independent professional skill judges.
