A bird got blown off course in a jet of drool from a giraffe’s nostrils last week when it dared to get close to the massive animal as it drank from a watering hole at the Kruger National Park in Western Cape, South Africa. The oxpecker (similar to a starling) was hit at full blast by the sneeze. Birds like this feed on ticks and open wounds on large mammals, so they have to be agile when those animals make any large movements, or get a tickle in their nose.. Giraffes are extremely vulnerable whilst drinking as they have to get down into a crouching position. This means getting up quick in the event of danger is not easy. What might look like a sneeze, however, was actually the giraffe’s nervous reaction.
