Again, Lagos seals popular food market

For the second time in less than a year, the Lagos State Government has sealed the popular Ile Epo Market, the second biggest food market in the state after Mile 12.

The market was sealed on Monday by officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Daily Trust can report.

10 months ago, the market was shut for about four weeks over environmental infraction.

Our correspondent observed some trucks belonging to LAWMA were inside the market while the gates were shut to traders and buyers.

Details of the infraction committed by the market have not been revealed. When contacted through a telephone number on the seal placed at the entrance gate, the person who picked asked our correspondent to come to LAWMA headquarters.

However a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the closure was as a result of heavy filth in the market.

“The market is very very dirty and the state government doesn’t want to take anything to chance with the spread of cholera that is why LAWMA was directed to move in and shut the market. You can also see heaps of refuse around here. This I think was why the market was shut,” a source told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity.

The state Ministry of Environment is yet to speak on the closure.
