Tony Tochukwu Odiefe, popularly known as Teeben, is currently making waves with his hit single, ‘Shayo’.
In 2022, Teeben released an appealing and relatable single titled ‘Shayo’ which became very popular amongst young campus students of Bradford University.
Shayo is a local Nigerian slang that translates to drinking alcohol. Mostly black African students who have roots connected to Nigeria and other major parts of the African continent would understand the core message Teeben intentionally communicates through the record.
Apart from the simplified nature of the chorus and how listeners from any background can connect with the song, the cover design capturing a cartoon hand firmly clinching an alcoholic bottle, conveys a strong message of what “Shayo” could mean to a listener.

Teeben’s “Shayo” is a vibrant and infectious Afrobeats anthem that effortlessly blends energetic rhythms with clever lyricism, creating an irresistible party atmosphere.
The opening commands set the tone, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the lively mood. Teeben’s delivery is charismatic, seamlessly switching between languages, adding a unique flavour to the song.
The clever play on the phrase “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s” is a testament to Teeben’s lyrical prowess, injecting humour into the narrative.
The song’s theme revolves around the unapologetic enjoyment of life, particularly the joy derived from socializing and indulging in a carefree attitude. The repetitive yet catchy chorus of “Shayo no be your mate” serves as a memorable hook, emphasizing the song’s central message of celebrating without reservations.
Musically, the track is a well-crafted blend of traditional Afrobeats elements and contemporary production. The fusion of Afrobeat and Teeben’s confident vocals makes “Shayo” a standout in the genre.
Teeben’s journey through the University of Bradford was marked by electrifying performances at various events. Ranging from campus festivals to academic ceremonies like the UBIES Award 2023, and Black History Month Final Celebration 2022 and 2023.
