African Youth champion, Ofili smashes African Indoor 200m record

400m African Youth champion, Favour Ofili has broken the African record in the women’s 200m indoors event at the SEC Indoor Championships, Fayetteville, USA.

She clinched first place with a massive PB of 22.75s to win her final heat in the Women’s 200m event at the Championships to emerge as Nigeria’s Indoor National Record holder as well as qualifying for the Women’s 200m event at the Olympic over the weekend.

The 18-year-old ran 22.75s to break the 22.80s African record set by Ivorian Murielle Ahouré at the NCAA Division I Championships, March 2009.

Ofili’s time was also the fourth best in the NCAA and the third fastest in her school – LSU – history. The time met the 2020 Olympics 22.89secs qualifying standard for the women’s 200m event.

The silver medalist at 2019 Rabat African Games placed third overall as the first heat was won by Abby Steiner in 22.50s, while Tamara Clark was second in an SB of 22.70s.

Ofili was 5th in 400m women at 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. Aside from the African record in 200m Indoor women, she’s now number 5 on World Athletics U-20yrs 200m Indoor women’s list.

She was discovered at the 2017 Youth Games in Ilorin where she ran 100m and 200m but failed to win the races.

In the same vein, Ruth Usoro had also qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the women’s long jump and triple jump events while competing at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship Sports Performance Center, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.

Usoro leapt 6.82m to win the long jump before leaping a distance of 14.36m in the women’s triple jump event.
