African School of Governance launched in Kigali

The African School of Governance (ASG) has been officially launched in Kigali, Rwanda, on October 21, 2024.

The graduate institution is designed to provide world-class education in public policy and governance, addressing the continent’s pressing leadership challenges.

Co-founded by His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and His Excellency Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the initiative unites African leaders, academics and philanthropists in a collective effort to strengthen governance across Africa.

The ASG offers a range of tailored academic programmes, including the Master of Public Administration (MPA), Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA), and specialised executive courses. These programmes will equip emerging leaders with the skills and knowledge to navigate Africa’s governance landscape while integrating African historical, political and socio-economic contexts.

In addition to its educational offerings, ASG will host research centres focused on policy innovation, African history, regional integration and technology.

The institution is dedicated to fostering home-grown solutions to Africa’s unique governance issues and will engage with governments, civil society and the private sector to drive policy reforms and sustainable development.

The inaugural President of ASG is Professor Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, with a governing board chaired by Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

ASG, supported by the Mastercard Foundation and other global partners, is poised to become a pan-African institution with global influence, nurturing the next generation of African leaders to tackle the continent’s challenges and opportunities.
