African citations poetry exhibition to hold December 10

The African citations poetry exhibition is set to take off on December 10 in Lagos. The event will feature literary tributes to notable individuals and institutions from across Africa. They will be presented as live performances, musical and video presentations, and poems on frames.

Speaking on the occasion, Akeem Lasisi stated that the show could widen the genre’s appeal. According to him, it will introduce poetry to new audiences.

He said, “As I have always tried to do, I want poetry to travel beyond the confines of poets and other intellectuals. I want more people to have access to it, enjoy its beauty, own it and contribute to its expansion.”

Additionally, he expressed his hope that more people will recognise poetry’s performative potential and pointed out that African poetry is mostly oral, spontaneous, and people-focused.

“As the world particularly radically goes digital, we have no excuse not to deploy all the elements that technology offers for the promotion of our craft. I have been doing this even before this era. Now that the industries are becoming more and more linked, it may just be time to further navigate the links,” Lasisi said.
