The Technical Director, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Omatseye Nesiama, yesterday advised the country’s athletes to the Rio 2016 Olympics to be focused and compete fairly.
Nesiama in an interview, also urged those who would be attending the Games for the first time to be confident.
“My advice for the first-time athletes is that they should be confident of themselves and be focused on their performance at the Games.
“They should not get carried away by the fact that they have made the team. They must bear in mind that the country expects every athlete representing it to put in their very best whether they are first-timers or not. They must also compete fairly,” he said.
Nesiama also implored the athletes not to contemplate the use of performance enhancing drugs, noting that offenders would eventually be identified and banned.
“The best athletes are not those that use performance enhancing substances but those that compete fairly, so, they should not even think of it.
“Anyone that uses performance enhancing drug will be fished out sooner or later and it will not be good for the athletes’ and country’s image,” he said.
The Games are scheduled for Aug. 5 to Aug. 21 in Brazil, while the athletics events commences on Aug. 12 to Aug. 21 at the Olympic Stadium. (NAN)
