Afelokhai, Anaemena deny wrongdoing after Rivers Utd suspension

Recently suspended influential players of Rivers United, goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai and burly defender, Ifeanyi Anaemena have denied committing any offence deserving of their indefinite suspension.

The Nigeria Professional Football League club side on Monday announced the suspension of the duo after their 3-0 bashing in the hands of Akwa United on Sunday in Uyo.

In a press statement signed by the General Manager, Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, the former Enyimba players were suspended for unethical & unprofessional sportsman conduct.

However, in exclusive interviews with the players, they claimed they were suspended simply because they lost 0-3 to Akwa United in a recent league game.

Anaemena said “I got the news just as you did. You may have to get to the management and ask them. I think because we lost 3-0 that’s why they suspended me and Theophilus. We are not the first team to lose 3-0 and will not be the last.

“But there is more it. Enyimba was not happy we left them and we are playing against them soon. So use your head and know what is happening. They only suspended two of us who are former Enyimba players.”

Afelokhai also said “It is possible because we are playing Enyimba, they suspended us. I am not saying that’s the reason but it is possible. God knows the truth and will always set the innocent free.

“What is the reason for the suspension? I have played 14 matches so far and lost only 3, so does that mean I am not doing well,” he said.

Meanwhile, an official of the club who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the two players were only being economical with the truth.
