Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has said his players are not against his training methods as they continue their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking with NFF TV after the practice match after their 2-0 friendly win over Garoua-based Cameroonian club Coton Sport, he confessed that he was impressed with how the boys stuck to the coaching crew’s game plan, working well with the ball, increasing the pace of their movements, and winning the gam.
“The boys have never shown any sign of cohesive grievance against my methods. They have been happy and they have been responding very well. I think they are very pleased and their attitude towards the training sessions have been awesome, really professional.
“I can tell you we struggled a little bit with the weather, but in terms of ball possession and movement, I think we were very impressed. Winning this game is a very good thing for us.”
“As the game progressed, you could see fatigue started setting in. So the ball movement became a bit slower. But whenever they recuperate, they always go out there and do exactly what we want them to do.
“But in front of goal, we are too few. That’s something we have to work on too. Because crosses are coming in well, ball possession is good. Playing to the sides, which is our strength, is very good. But arriving in the box with fewer players is not so good. That’s what we are going to work on in the next few days.”
“The way I operate is I like interactive sessions. I’ve my own philosophy, way of doing things. I will try and make you understand why I want you to do that way and we’ve been preaching that from day one and the boys understand me now.
“First game is very crucial to any team, it will give you a lot of encouragement, going into the tournament proper. I will say a little bit but I’m more relaxed now than two weeks or a week ago,” he concluded.
The Super Eagles continue their Afcon preparations ahead of their first group game against Mohamed Salah-inspired Egypt on Tuesday, January 11.
