The Acting Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Mrs. Omolola Olanipekun has said the board in an enforcement exercise to ensure that the city is free from hawkers and cattle has arrested and prosecuted 587 street hawkers and nine herdsmen at various locations within the city.
She said the board also arrested 25 cows and 51 sheep while several illegal dump sites within and around the city centre were identified and have been mopped up while sustainable measures like placing refuse bins in strategic locations are underway.
Mrs. Olanipekun said carefree attitude of many residents toward environmental sanitation call for concern, adding that majority of the residents are not ready to acquire the requisite dust bins to properly manage the waste within their household.
“Provision of required waste receptacles needs constant reminder to FCT residents, both old and new while proliferation of illegal car wash has a negative impact on the environment,” she said.
