AEDC warns as court jails 2 vandals in Kogi, Niger

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has toughened its grip to tackle vandalism just as a court jailed a staff and another person nabbed over vandalism in Kogi and Niger states.

In a statement on Wednesday, the company said last Thursday, a staff of AEDC, Bamidele Rasaq, who was arrested by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi, was charged to a Chief Magistrates’ Court which sentenced him to one year imprisonment for vandalising AEDC installations.

Commenting, the Chief Marketing Officer of AEDC, Mr Donald Etim, said the company has zero tolerance for vandalism of its network assets irrespective of whether the perpetrators are its staff or members of the public.

He also said disciplinary measures will take its full course which in this case is outright dismissal and loss of all employee benefits. 

Also in Niger, an Upper Sharia Court in Minna has jailed one Abdulsalamad Abubakar for one year after convicting him of vandalising an AEDC substation in Paida junction of Minna. He was caught in March 2022 by the police and charged to court.

In a statement, Etim said: “The management will not relent in its effort to tackle vandalism and other mischief on its network.

“We are committed to ensuring that apprehended vandals are tried in accordance with the law and made to face the consequences of their actions without any prejudice.”
