Some football fans are of the opinion that instead of playing for draw in that match, the Eagles should have played attacking football to get the maximum points that would have placed them on top of the group.
Speaking to Trustsports, the former Super Eagles attacker who earned the nickname “headmaster” because of his heading ability disagreed with those who hold such opinion as he said Eagles displayed high tactical discipline and that was what fetched them the vital away point.
He explained that considering the strength of the Tunisians, it would have been foolhardy of the Eagles of Nigeria to go all out for the three points as he said in the process, anything could have happened.
Adepoju said with the draw in Tunisia, the Nigerian national team is still in contention but the story would have been different today had the Eagles attacked their opponents and ended up losing all the points to their rival.
“I commend Eagles tactical approach against Tunisia. Had it been they made the mistake of going all out for the three points, such a move would have failed them because a single goal conceded in the process would have proved disastrous.
“Despite the temptation to go for the maximum points, the Eagles exercised serious caution in their approach to the crucial encounter. The players listened to the technical crew and I doff my hat for all of them” he said
He therefore asked Nigerians who are of the opinion that the players should have gone for the three points to pause and consider the dangers inherent in such an approach which he insisted was capable of wrecking the team’s World Cup qualification ambition.
Adepoju said with the draw against Tunisia, all the team needs to qualify for the 2010 World Cup is to ensure that they beat the Carthage Eagles in Abuja and then go ahead to win their remaining matches.
He maintained that with the spirit in the team’s camp, the team will have no problem winning its remaining matches.
The General Manager of 3SC Ibadan therefore advised that Eagles critics should at all times try to find something positive to say about the team so that the players would be motivated to do their best for the country.
