Adenuga bags City People’s ‘Man of the Year’ award

Globacom chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr, has been named by City People Magazine as the ‘Man of the Year’ for the year 2015. The magazine said it came to the decision after considering the humanitarian activities and business prowess of Dr. Adenuga.
The award was formally presented to Globacom’s Group Executive Director, Mrs. Bella Disu, at the Mike Adenuga Towers, Victoria Island, headquarters of the Group, for onward transmission to the Globacom chairman.
According to City People, Dr. Adenuga beat other prominent Nigerians, such as, Prof Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who conducted  successful general election in 2015; former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, who is currently the Minister of Power, Works and Housing; former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who willingly accepted defeat in the presidential election, and Alhaji Aliko Dangote for establishing Dangote Cement in other African countries.
City People also cited Dr Adenuga’s “silent philanthropic gestures across Nigeria” and his leadership role in the business sector in Africa as some of the factors that won the award for the Globacom chairman.
The magazine noted that Dr. Adenuga had remained steadfast in giving to various charitable causes over the years and described him as a “self-effacing philanthropist.”
“Last year alone, unknown to many, Dr. Mike Adenuga touched the lives of very many people from the Arts to Music, Politics and Business and even ordinary Nigerians,” the citation prepared by City People disclosed.
The citation further stated that Dr. Adenuga had over the last 20 years made silent donations to about 5,000 elderly senior citizens as allowances on a monthly basis. And at the end of the year, he picked another 1,000 Nigerians across the country and  empowered  economically.
“But as a rule, he does not talk about it. And those around him are not expected to keep mum,” City People said.
One of the world’s wealthiest men, Dr. Adenuga sits atop, obviously, one of the continent’s largest business empires which comprise oil and gas, telecoms, aviation, banking and real estate.
Dr Adenuga’s telecoms company, Globacom, has operations in several African countries, and in May 2015, made a $600 million bid for Ivorian mobile telecom operator, Comium Cote d’Ivoire, which has been grappling with debt and cash flow challenges.
