The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to ensure a peaceful transition of power from outgoing Governor Gboyega Oyetola to Senator Ademola Adeleke on Sunday.

The state PDP caretaker chairman, Dr Akindele Adekunle, in a statement also urged its members and supporters to embark on fasting and prayers against any plot to scuttle the handover.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Adeleke of the PDP as the winner of the July 16 governorship election in the state. He defeated Oyetola, of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adekunle raised the alarm over the alleged plot to create a constitutional crisis ahead of the Sunday event.

Did PDP ask Okowa to resign as Atiku’s running mate?

The PDP chief noted that the South West was a politically volatile zone where altering the will of the people in the past had erupted in political instability, advising that plotting against a peaceful transition would be the greatest disservice any leader could do to the people of the state.

“We call on western diplomatic missions, international democracy organisations and relevant national security agencies to closely monitor Osun State in the next one week. Peaceful transition is a must in line with the 1999 constitution and any move to truncate that process is a threat not just to Osun State but the entire national democratic project,” the statement said.
