Addressing the plight of Nigerian military widows

Now we’re seeing moves to deny us this privilege by persons who think we’re not entitled to proceeds from the emblem and sticker sales.

Worried by the plight of military widows in Nigeria, the Nigerian Legion, gave a 10-year franchise through the Nigerian Legion Mass Transit Ltd., the mandate to sell stickers in order to raise revenue  and was launched in Abuja on May 6, 2021.

Now we’re seeing moves to deny us this privilege by persons who think we’re not entitled to proceeds from the emblem and sticker sales.

At the National Council meeting of the Nigerian Legion in Abuja, under a theme ‘National Council Meeting and Empowerment of Widows’ we were barred from entering the venue.

This is total injustice to us as widows, no one can cry more than the bereaved. We want to state categorically that we want to henceforth produce the stickers on our own in order to raise revenue and bring up our widows and orphans, a sticker is a smile in the life of a grieving widow.

The loss of our husbands, which cannot be quantified, have left a huge vacuum in our widow’s lives because when the breadwinner is lost, there will be no bread.

Therefore, we the military widows want to sell the stickers on our own so Nigerians can patronise us. So, we appeal to Nigerians from all walks of life to patronise us and buy the stickers, this is one way of paying us back, it will also put food on our table, and give us a sense of well-being again in life.

We all thank the minister of defence and minister for women affairs, the NAOWA, NAPOWA etc. for what they’re doing to us as widows through empowerment.

Mrs. Gift Veronica Aluko, National President, Military Widows Association (MIWA)
