Fayemi’s submission was reechoed by activists and civil society organisations (CSOs) at the 4th memorial lecture of late Dr. Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem yesterday in Abuja as part of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of the Oragnisation of African Unity/African Union (OAU /AU).
The event themed, “Fifty years since OAU/AU, Taju and the Pan African Agenda”, was organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).
Governor Fayemi, the pioneer Director of CDD, said “though the African continent unity late Tajudeen fought for has not been realized, this does not mean we should not continue to work towards it.”
While urging the youths to see Pan-Africanism as a serious project to be fought for, the governor said similar events were held for late Taju in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and London as a confirmation of the importance of the cause he stood for.
Prof. Okey Ibeanu speaking on the theme said it is regrettable that the unity of Africa with their brethren in Diaspora that led to Pan Africanism was relegated to the background when the OAU was formed in 1963.
Hajia Amina Salihu said “we need to open our mind to see Pan Africanism beyond the continent. The youths need to be tutored in not forgetting their roots so that when they go outside the continent to study abroad, they can come back with the knowledge to develop their continent.”
Other highlights of the event were reading Pan Africanism   Poetry by Odia Ofeimun and Abuja Poetry Circle; and the Mock (Drama) African Union Summit Directed by Okello Oculi.
