Researchers and academics have converged on the Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano to look into the challenges left behind by the coronavirus pandemic.
The event themed, “Addressing the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic through social and management sciences research” was part of an annual conference organised by the Faculty of social and management sciences of the University.
While giving his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, said the topic of discussion was one of the major issues that had affected communities and yet to recover from.
He added that research was not only for academic consumption but also for economic advancement due to its importance for most communities affected.
Speaking on behalf of the Kano State Government, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, assured of government’s readiness to implement resolutions that could bring development to the institution and the state.
“We have to do our own research, we have to find the solutions ourselves and Ii hope we have the answers to our findings,” he added.
The keynote speaker, Professor Muhammad Kabir, stressed the need to look at issues surrounding the pandemic that were beyond medical and health problem.
“We are looking into the economic effects it has on social wellbeing to bring majors that can be adapted.
“You know, it did not have only medical issue, so many issues, the economy has suffered, jobs have been lost and people are not getting money all because of COVID-19. It has affected every aspect of livelihood.
“So, we are here today to foster ways possible to tackle the situation”.
