The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) has commenced Invitro Fertilisation (IVF) services.
Prof. Kabiru Bala, Vice-Chancellor ABU, who disclosed this during the university’s 43rd convocation held on Saturday, 27th January 2024, said the services are offered in collaboration with Nisa Reproductive Health Centre Kaduna as part of the major developments recorded by the university recently.
Prof Bala disclosed that the first IVF-conceived baby was delivered on the 16th of May 2023, with a weight of 3kg, making it the first in any public hospital in Northwest Nigeria.
Other subsequent deliveries via this technology, according to the Vice-Chancellor, had been successfully undertaken.
“While the embryology laboratory of the private facility was used for the collection of female eggs and male sperm for fertilization, the other aspects of treatment and patient management were undertaken at ABUTH,” he explained.
