 Members of  Nigerian Red Cross Society FCT branch took to the streets of Abuja to to celebrate world Red Cross day.

World Red Cross Day is celebrated on the 8th of May each year. This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born 8th May of 1828.

He is the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

The Chairman Nigerian Red Cross Society, FCT Branch, Mr. Taiye Olaniyi told Daily Trust, in Abuja, on Tuesday that the gesture was to sensitize public on Red Cross activities.

“This particular awareness walk is to do a kind of public sensitization of what the Red Cross stands for as a humanitarian organization.

“The preliminary of today’s event we had quiz, a simulation exercise at National Art and Culture yesterday. We have had Juma’at prayers and Church service on Friday and Sunday respectively and every year we come up with one type of programme or the other to further enable the citizenry of the world what fundamental principles of Red Cross Society represents”, he said.

According to him, the walk started at Berger roundabout and ended at their headquarters located in Utako, Abuja.

He also said that the society was using the platform to give first aid and to link up with other appropriate authorities and Agencies to ensure that adequate assistance is given to the society.

Olaniyi who said there were tragedies and disasters all over the world added that the Society was in forefront in providing first aid to the affected people all over the world.
