Abuja, Lagos, Benue record high rate of health violations – Report

The Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Benue states have been identified to account for the highest incidents of sexual and reproductive health and rights related violations in Nigeria. 

A report presented by a non-profit human rights organisation, Lawyers Alert, said the FCT had the highest violations twice, in 2017 and 2019 while Lagos topped twice in 2020 and 2021.

It stated that Benue had the second highest violations in 2017, 2020 and 2021.

The President of Lawyers Alert, Rommy Mom, said sexual and reproductive health and rights were important and fundamental to an individual ability to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, saying the group chose to do that to provide additional data for SRHR.

He said these rights included the right to make informed decisions about one’s body, sexual and reproductive health, and relationships as well as the right to access information, education and services.

The report revealed across the different groups, emotional and verbal abuse topped the list of violations, ranging between 19-40 per cent with female sex workers aged between 25 – 40 most emotionally and verbally abused at 73 per cent.
