Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road to be completed in 2023 – Minister

The Federal Government has promised to complete the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road construction in 2023.

The Minister of State for Works and Housing, Abubakar D. Aliyu, gave the assurance on Thursday when he led the delegation of the ministry to an inspection tour to Kano.

According to the minister, the work has been phased into three zones of Abuja-Kaduna, Kaduna-Zaria and Zaria-Kano to hasten its completion.

He said: “We were able to establish commitment with our contractors to see that section two, which is Kaduna to Zaria is delivered in the last quarter of 2022, then Zaria to Kano, a little later, maybe into the first quarter of 2023.

“But for Abuja-Kaduna, which is the longest and most difficult in terms of terrain and the materials you will have to remove before you can finish it, we are also working with our contractors to see that it is also delivered very close to these datelines.

“The road is about 378 kilometers. So if you multiply it by two, because it is dual carriage way, you’ll see that it is almost 800 kilometers.

“You can imagine the distance. But we are fully committed to complete it.

“It is not just about completion. We want to give people a quality and world class road, and with what I have seen so far, I am confident that we will achieve this target.

“We started from rehabilitation, but having understood that the road has stayed so long, we decided to reconstruct it so as to increase its lifespan,” he added.

On the complain of slow progress of the work, the minister attributed it to the fact that construction companies have to share the road with commuters which makes it very difficult for them.

He then appealed to people to be patient as the Federal Government is doing everything possible to complete it without further extension.

Daily Trust reports that Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road reconstruction commenced in June, 2018 with the promise of completion in 36 months.
