Dear Senator Dave Umahi, Honourable Minister of Works,
I hope this open letter finds you well. Allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your remarkable achievements in the ministry since assuming your esteemed position. Your dedication and commitment to improving our nation’s infrastructure are truly commendable, and it is evident that your leadership has brought about a positive change on some of our country’s roads, especially towards the southern region.
However, amidst these notable accomplishments, I am compelled to draw your attention to a matter of grave concern; the deplorable state of the road that connects Abuja through Akwanga, Nasarawa State, with Jos, Plateau State, and beyond. This vital artery, which serves as a lifeline to countless Nigerians, has become synonymous with tragedy and despair due to its dilapidated condition.
Recently, I embarked on a journey along this route from Abuja to Jos to spend the Easter break with my family. Regrettably, what should have been a joyous occasion turned into a harrowing experience for so many commuters, as I witnessed no fewer than three fatal accidents and encountered over 30 vehicles stranded due to various kinds of damage, such as tire bursts and engine failures caused by the treacherous conditions of the road. The high number of potholes, uneven surfaces, and incessant shaking have not only claimed far too many lives but have also caused immeasurable suffering to commuters and travellers.
The economic significance and security implications of this crucial road cannot be overstated, particularly given its connection to the North East region. It serves as a vital link for transportation and commerce, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and people across multiple states. Moreover, its strategic importance for national security cannot be ignored, as it provides access to regions that are of strategic interest to our country.
Therefore, I implore you, on behalf of the countless commuters who rely on this route daily, to prioritise the urgent repair and rehabilitation of Abuja-Jos Road. Similar to the commendable efforts undertaken by the previous administration on the Abuja to Akwanga and then Benue stretch, it is imperative that immediate action be taken to address the deteriorating state of this critical infrastructure.
Investing in the repair and maintenance of this road will not only improve the safety and well-being of our citizens but will also stimulate economic growth and development in the affected regions. It will enhance connectivity, promote trade and commerce, and create employment opportunities for our people, improve the well-being of our people, thereby contributing to the overall prosperity and advancement of our nation.
As leaders entrusted with the responsibility of steering our country towards a brighter future, I appeal to your sense of duty and leadership to heed our plea and take decisive action to rectify this dire situation. The lives and livelihoods of millions of Nigerians depend on it.
