Abuja doctor accused of stealing day-old baby

A 17-year-old girl, Favour Idowu, has accused an Abuja-based medical doctor of absconding with her newborn baby in Dutsen-Makaranta, a town in Bwari Area Council of the FCT.

Favour alleged that she went to Trendy Hospital, Clinic & Maternity, Dutsen-Makaranta, last Wednesday after she started feeling signs of labour.

Favour said, “The doctor gave me a tablet to place under my tongue and he inserted another one in my private part. Labour started afterwards and continued for up to three days. I gave birth on Saturday. He beat the baby before it cried, I fainted, and when I opened my eyes, I saw the baby beside me. The next thing was I saw two girls taking the baby away. The doctor told me that they were going to give it immunisation.

‘’When I opened my eyes again, I discovered myself in a different hospital.”

Favour denied an allegation that there was an arrangement between her and the doctor that he would settle her with money in order to take over the child.

Asked about the father of the baby, she lamented that he had since denied responsibility.

Our correspondent, who was at the hospital on Tuesday, reports that it was allegedly sealed by the police while the missing baby’s mother, Favour, was taken to another clinic within the community where she was recuperating.

Also speaking, Favour’s elder brother, Samuel Idowu, said the doctor disappeared following the incident despite communicating with him on phone for over five hours.

A woman residing close to the hospital, who preferred to remain anonymous, alleged there were similar cases in the hospital, with the latest one leading to a riot by residents.

Another resident alleged that about three weeks ago, a woman confronted the doctor with thugs for failing to deliver a baby to her after collecting some money from her.

Attempts by our reporter to speak with the doctor yielded no result as he was said to be in police custody.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Dutsen-Alhaji, CSP Paul Danladi, who confirmed the incident, said the case had been transferred to the Force Headquarters.
