The Central Bank of Nigeria, headquarters, Abuja, yesterday afternoon, emerged winners of 42nd edition of the CBN Governor’s Cup.

The Abuja branch of the apex bank defeated the Lagos branch by 3-1 to lift the trophy for the 7th time in a match played at the Ilorin township stadium.

The Abuja team which came from behind to defeat their arch rival also produced the Most Valuable Player, Hassan Hassan and Highest Goal Scorer in Aliu Bello with 15 goals.

The match had ended 1-1 in the first half from dead ball situations before the Abuja team turned the table around in the second half with two goals.

The Bauchi branch had earlier on Friday won the bronze against Ilorin 3-2 after a 2-2 draw to emerge third.

The fair play award was won by the Ilorin branch through Godwin Olusegun Adeoye.

The victory saw the Abuja branch who are the defending champions, lift the trophy for the seventh time since the competition started in 1981, having won it in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2008, 2009, 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Daily Trust reports that the winners of the finals received a trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of N2 million.

The second and third place team went home with silver and bronze medals as well as N1.5 million and N1 million respectively. The 4th place team received the sum of N500,000.
