Ahmedu Bello University won two gold medals in male and female hockey, while Nasarawa State University (NASU) settled for the mother of all gold medals by winning the prestigious football gold. To win the gold in football, Nasarawa State University defeated hard fighting University of Lagos 4-2 on penalties after the match which stretched into 120 minutes ended 2-2 .
Hosts Bayero University Kano, BUK, managed to pick a bronze in the soccer event after defeating Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana (KNUST) 1-0.
While the University of Education, Winneba of Ghana won silver medal in the female hockey category, Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) won silver in the male hockey category.
University of Benin, UNIBEN, and host Bayero University Kano, BUK, settled for bronze medals in the male and female hockey respectively.
Meanwhile, UNILAG’s striker Steven Okorie won Highest Goal Scorer in the football event with six goals. Although two other players – Ena Keno Iyaruwe of DELSU and Papa Diouf of Universite de Chikea, Senegal – also scored six goals each in the tournament, Okorie was given the award nevertheless.
Against the expectations of soccer pundits, Olaniyi Johnson of BUK was picked as the most valuable player in football.
