ABU Microfinance gets new MD

The Board of Directors of Ahmadu Bello University Microfinance Bank has approved the appointment of Aminu Mohammed Abubakar as Managing Director of the bank as part of efforts to reposition the financial institution for improved service delivery.

The board, chaired by Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Ibrahim Garba, also approved the appointment of 21 others for the bank comprising six management staff, two officers and 13 graduate trainees. Abubakar and the 21 newly employed staff of the bank have since assumed duties.

Abubakar  joined the banking sector in 1993 shortly after a diploma programme in banking at Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Na-Kowa Microfinance Bank from 2015 to 2018.

The-49 year-old new Managing Director, who is a specialist in microfinance banking, has Masters in Public Administration earned in 2017 from Ahmadu Bello University in addition to BSc Economics he obtained from University of Abuja in 2008.

He began his banking career at Habib Nigeria Bank Limited (now defunct) at the bank’s main branch in Kaduna in 1993 where he worked in all departments of the branch and rose to become head cashier.

Abubakar remained in Habib Bank till 2006 after serving in different branches of the bank in Makarfi, Turunku and NDA all in Kaduna State variously as accounts and clearing officer, customer service officer, non-interest banking officer, relationship management officer and other key responsibilities.

In 2007 he joined the services of Na-Kowa Microfinance Bank where he worked as head of credit, marketing and business development till 2010 when he was elevated as head of operations responsible for ensuring that the bank’s two branches carried out their duties in line with approved operation guidelines.
