Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, the Vice Chancellor of the university, made this known yesterday while delivering his speech at the University’s Golden Jubilee Convocation, which took place in the institution’s Samaru campus.

Professor Mustapha said ABU is always proud to be identified as the largest university in Sub-Saharan Africa, adding that it is a thing of joy for every member of the ABU community that the university has attained 50 years.

“We are of course assembled here today to award first degrees to deserving graduates who have successfully gone through their training and found worthy in learning and character for award of degree in their chosen field of study.

“It is incumbent upon me to congratulate all the graduating students, their lecturers and all those involved in the hectic learning process.

“I am happy to announce that at this special Golden Jubilee Convocation, the university will award degrees on a total number of 7, 680 graduates,” Professor Mustapha said.

He said that out of the total number of the graduating students, 21 had obtained first class honours, 960 got second class upper honours, 4,130 came out with second class lower, 2,209 got third class while the remaining graduated with pass degrees.

The VC charged the graduands to be good ambassadors of the university anywhere they find themselves. He also called on them to use the skills, knowledge and good character they have acquired while in the university for the service of humanity.

The highlight of the occasion was the award of degrees to the graduating students by the Chancellor of the University, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubkar, the Sultan of Sokoto.

Numerous parties were held in the university yesterday, organised by the graduands and their well-wishers.

The about two months ABU at 50 celebrations would come to an end today with awards of honourary degrees and prestigious Sardauna Award to some distinguished personalities.
