The Chartered Institute of Transport Administrators of Nigeria (CIoTA) has lamented the absence of legislation for the transport sector which they said is responsible for the slow growth of the sector.
President of CIoTA, Prince Segun Obayendo stated this over the weekend while addressing a press conference ahead of the National Transport Summit slated for December 12.
“It’s a big concern, ideally the national summit should have been in Lagos but we want to talk to the people in power. There should be total professionalization of the transport sector. If you’re not licensed to be a professional driver, you’re not supposed to engage in that business.
Obayendo said “The Institute is advocating for the speedy reintroduction of the Transport bill which was passed by the 9th Senate but wasn’t assented to by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He noted “Although some agencies in the Aviation sector raised concerns on the Bill which is supposed to establish a National Transportation Commission, the Institute is engaging with the aggrieved agencies to address the gray areas,”
According to him “The huge potentials of the marine and blue economy sector as well as the transport cannot be achieved without the presence of a law that governs the sector,”
Speaking further, he said the Institute is advocating that only professionals should head government agencies that are transport-related which is why it has commenced issuance of license to individuals who are qualified.
