Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar has called on Islamic scholars to provide workable solutions to problems through public engagement of religion and theology to address the nation’s social injustice for peace and security to be guaranteed.
Abdulsalami made the call yesterday in Keffi while declaring open the 2nd Annual International Conference organized by the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Represented by a former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Ismail Usman, Abdusalami identified some of the social injustices as bribery and corruption, tribalism, nepotism, discrimination, among others.
“Religion should be one of the vehicles to be used in entrenching unity in diversity as it launches man into wide horizons of truth and goodness, acquainting him with God and the rest of the universe,” he said, adding, “We struggle to keep Nigeria one and to a large extent, promote its unity and oneness regardless of our ethno-cultural and religious diversity. Therefore whatever is morally justified to keep Nigeria together as one indivisible and indissoluble nation is cherished and embraced. This conference should therefore ensure that that issues on social justice and sustainable development in the glorious Qur’an and Sunnah that will move Nigeria forward are brought to the lime light.”
Earlier in his remark, the Head of Department of Islamic Studies, Dr. Abdullahi Adamu Suleiman, said that the conference was organized to look at issues and provide solutions to challenges of social justice and sustainable development in the country.
