Daily Trust learnt that a combined team of armed policemen and ex-militant leaders in Bayelsa State rescued the victim yesterday.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr.Hillary Okpara, said the abducted senator’s mother was dumped at a fishing camp in Azuzuama community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Council of the state due to pressure from security operatives.
But a source from the Paulker family said the intervention of a former militant leader and now National Coordinator of the South-South Region Peace Advocacy Group, General Pastor Reuben, led to the rescue of the woman.
According to security sources, a serving Police Inspector, and one of his siblings, an auto mechanic along Edepie road, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The Inspector, who is attached to the Akenfa Police Division of the state police command, was reported to have acted as driver for the men who abducted the senator’s mother.
The state Police Commissioner, Hillary Okpara, declined to confirm the identity of the suspects.
He said: “We reported to you earlier that we arrested many of the suspects. The parents of the people arrested put pressure on the kidnappers and those arrested also put pressure on them. They dropped the senator’s mother at a fishing camp in Azuzuama. It was a combined effort of the police and other security agencies.”
