Abandoned car causes bomb scare in Abuja

The vehicle was parked in front of the AP Plaza building on the crescent, which houses the Petroleum Equalization Management Fund, banks and insurance companies.

The vehicle was said to have been wired with a red flexible electric cable running through the ignition area beneath the car’s dashboard, all the way to the booth of the car.

“Somebody parked or left his vehicle and there was an electrical wire that came out from the burnet of the vehicle and hung by the driver’s door side which caused the bank security men to raise an alarm.

“We heard that the man’s vehicle broke down since yesterday and just abandoned it there, without informing the security men around the area about his intention to leave it overnight or about any attempt to go and get a mechanic. After some observation, the security people then discovered that the car had been there for a long while without anybody making attempt to move it away and it became a security concern,” eyewitness said.

The owner, according to him, later surfaced claiming he went to call a mechanic to effect repair on the car. “The police men who came to search the bomb had moved the car, the owner alongside the mechanic,” the witness said.

Normal business activity has since resumed in the Guaranty Trust Bank which frontage the car was parked as well as the A.P. plaza. However, not all the bank staff returned to work due to fear of the unknown.

Police spokesman superintendent Jimoh Moshood, however, said “ there was no bomb scare anywhere in Abuja today (yesterday). A vehicle abandoned in the early hours around AP Plaza in Wuse 2 was screened by Police Anti Bomb Squad and Police Armament Unit. No explosive device was found. The location is rendered safe. The vehicle and the owner are now with police investigators. Security in the area and all other locations in the FCT have been beefed.”

He said members of the public should go about their normal businesses without fear but report any suspicious activities in their environments to the nearest police station.
